Fortification Düsseldorf

Stadt Düsseldorf

Completed: 2010

Up until the beginning of the 19th century, Düsseldorf was characterized by a mighty fortification with bastions. Today there are hardly any remains of these fortification structures. For a show room in a new Düsseldorf subway station, the former fortification with bastions was virtually reconstructed. During recent construction work, ruins of this fortification from the 16th to 18th century were found and shall be integrated in the show room. The reconstruction of the section between Mühlen bastion and Flinger bastion was based on historical sources and archaeological excavations.

It was in the 16th century when Duke Wilhelm V surrounded the city with a modern defense system. In front of the city wall a fortification belt of five bastions was built. At the same time the construction of a citadel was planned. In the 18th century an extensive expansion of the fortification with the bastions was made. Electoral prince Johann Wilhelm made Düsseldorf one of the most important fortresses in Europe.
